Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanumare) are mostly known as Mexican walking fish, but they are not fish, in fact they're amphibians! The axolotl is a neotenic salamander, closely related to the tiger salamander. They are currently endangered in the wild(from pollution, getting eaten and more), but they have successfully been breaded in captive and make popular pets! Axolotls live in lake Xochimilco in Mexico. Everyone knows (Probably 8 years and under wouldn't know this) that amphibians develop from a an egg, then into a larval form and finally into an adult! But, the axolotl actually remains in its larval form through out its whole life! Axolotls can live up to 12-15 years of age (Or maybe less if you don't look after it well). Scientists are really interested in axolotls because, they have the ability to regenerate their limbs. An axolotl has three (on each side) feathery gills located at the back of its head. As the water passes through its gills, it takes it in as oxygen. Every once in a while, the axolotl comes up and gulps a breathe of air. An axolotl can grow up to 12-18 inches (45.72CM). Axolotls would prefer to be in dark places, because, they are partly blind and dislike light. They use sent to find food, and like my axolotl, he always puts his head down and searches for food. They also love blood worms, earth worms and more, you can find out how to care for one in >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
